PIAM 15th GIIFT INTAKE

Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia (PIAM) held a two-day orientation and industry induction program for the 15th intake of the General Insurance Internship for Talent (GIIFT) on 15 January and 16 January 2020 at Akademi Etiqa, Kuala Lumpur. For this intake, PIAM had received more than 100 applications, out of which 28 interns were selected to join this program.

The interns were mainly undergraduates from the faculties of Actuarial Science, Science, Business Insurance, Risk Management & Insurance, Business Administration, Actuarial Science & Mathematics, Marketing Business and Commerce from Sunway University, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Macquarie University, University of Southampton, University Malaya (UM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), INTI International College, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).

On the first day of orientation, the interns were taught soft skills on effective communications, problem solving and presentation techniques by Equonxo Experience Sdn. Bhd. On the second day, PIAM CEO, Mr Mark Lim presented an overview of the industry and the key issues. Speakers from member companies provided short presentations on Underwriting, Claims, Business Development, Compliance, Analytics and Loss Adjusting.

The interns were then attached to nine member companies on a 12 to 16 weeks structured internship program at the various departments such as claims, underwriting, actuary, casualty, pricing valuation and finance.

As at the end of March this year, a total of 435 interns completed their internship training while 54 were successfully recruited by PIAM member companies upon their graduation. The 16th intake will be under way for June – August 2020 period and PIAM is targeting to recruit between 25 and 30 interns into this program.

General Insurance Internship for Talent (GIIFT) is positioned as an awareness enhancing program to reach out and profile the industry to the pool of young talent at our universities. It showcases the rich and varied career opportunities in the world of general insurance by exposing these talent to short internships at the various member companies, and allowing them to gain an insight of general insurance as a global and dynamic industry to work in. It is opened to undergraduates of all disciplines in the local or international universities in Malaysia. Project GIIFT was launched on 1 July 2015, with a pilot batch of 12 interns.
